1. Global egg prices skyrocketed as avian flu affected supply.
A main factor driving the spike in egg prices is the peak of avian flu outbreaks in North America and Europe causing the culling of tens of millions of egg-laying poultry. Global egg prices have skyrocketed as the avian flu outbreaks spread around the world and changing consumer tastes put pressure on supply.
According to analysts at Rabobank, the average global egg price has increased by 60% compared to 2019. The supply shortage has also created temporary restrictions on McDonald's breakfast services in Australia. A major factor driving the egg prices skyrocketed is the peak of avian influenza outbreaks in North America and Europe causing the culling of tens of millions of egg-laying poultry. Rabobank said about 33 million hens were culled in the US between November 2023 and July this year, following another avian influenza outbreak in 2022 that killed 40 million hens.

2. Understanding pig sounds with AI
European scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm which is capable of decoding pig sounds aiming to create a tool to help the farmers improve the lives of animals.
A team of experts from Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, France, Norway and the Czech Republic used thousands of recorded sounds from the pigs in various situations, such as playing, being isolated or fighting over food. Through the study, they identified sounds that expressed their positive or negative emotions.
A behavioral biologist Elodie Mandel-Briefer of the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) - co-leader of the study said that understanding the language of animals will contribute significantly to improving the lives of animals in livestock farming.
