2. Ba Ria - Vung Tau: 3 African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in Chau Duc district

Accordingly, in August 2024, 3 African swine fever outbreaks in the district were reported. Total number of pigs of all kinds infected and destroyed was 39.
Of the 39 pigs infected and killed in 3 households, there were 35 hogs for meat and 4 sows. Initial symptoms reported were high fever, bleeding in thin skin areas, lethargy and refusal to eat. Through information reported from the livestock owners, it can be seen that most outbreaks occurred due to failure to properly implement biosafety and disease safety procedures in livestock farming. Specifically, the symptoms appearing in the pig herd all occurred 5-10 days after the hogs for meat were sold and animal feed were received and the livestock households did not carry out sanitation and disinfection for the employees carrying the brans, transport vehicles and traders.

In order to ensure the safety of the pig herd, especially during the period when the favorable price of live pigs is for the farmers. Mr. Tran Van Thuan, an official of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Chau Duc District recommended that the farmers in the district must strictly implement the biosecurity measures in animal farming and pay special attention to hygiene and disinfection of people and vehicles before entering the raising area.

Currently, African swine fever (ASF) cases were still reported in 249 communes in 86 districts of 29 provinces and cities across the country. In context of the complicated ASF developments, especially outbreaks in Chau Duc district, the Sub-Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine continues to strengthen coordination with departments and People's Committees of communes and towns in the district to focus on promoting information and propaganda, instructing the farmers on measures to protect the health of pig herds, strengthen disease surveillance, control the slaughter and quarantine of animal transportation.
