NEWS HEADLINES OF NOVEMBER 2025

1. Pig prices are unlikely to increase dramatically at the end of the year

Pig prices will be difficult to recover in the near future due to abundant supply

On November 13, domestic pig prices continued to decrease with the lowest level of 46,000 VND/kg, with only 2 localities maintaining a high level of 50,000 VND/kg, namely Dong Nai and Ca Mau. At Hoc Mon wholesale market - the largest pork consumer in Ho Chi Minh City, pork prices fell to 56,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. Each night, the number of pigs arriving at the market is 5,300, a high increase compared to previous months.

More pressure due to imported pork

In early 2025, pig prices continued to increase and peaked at 68,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, in some places 72,000 - 75,000 VND/kg. However, the African swine fever outbreak in some localities has caused the market to change negatively.

Large enterprises, such as C.P. Vietnam and CJ Vietnam, affirmed that the supply from large-scale farms remains stable, thanks to the application of disease prevention measures and the planned increase of herds by about 10%/year. Some enterprises have even increased their herds by 3 times to meet market demand, while prices have continued to fall.

Since October, continuous rain and storms have further reduced pork prices. According to the Dong Nai Livestock Association, with the current price of 46,000 - 51,000 VND/kg, small-scale farmers are losing about 5,000 VND/kg. Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, informed that the amount of imported pork in recent months has doubled compared to the same period last year, with prices cheaper than domestic meat, creating pressure that makes it difficult for domestic pork prices to recover.

Many livestock companies also believe that the price of live pigs will have difficulty recovering in the near future because the supply is still abundant, while the purchasing power in the market has decreased by about 15% since mid-year, leading to a significant increase in "inventory" pigs. According to Mr. Le Xuan Huy, Deputy General Director of C.P. Vietnam, many large-scale livestock enterprises are still participating in the market, the abundant supply makes it difficult for prices to increase again.

In fact, the current pork supply is mainly guaranteed by enterprises such as C.P. Vietnam, Japfa, Emivest, CJ, and many emerging units such as Dabaco, GreenFeed, BAF Vietnam, Hoa Phat, Hoang Anh Gia Lai... The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said that the total meat output of the country in 2025 is expected to reach 8.5 million tons, of which pork accounts for 5.5 million tons, enough to meet the demand increase of 15% - 20% at the end of the year. In the last month of the year alone, the country needs about 500,000 tons of pork.

There will be no shortage

Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, Chairman of the Dong Nai Livestock Association, said that the total pig herd in the locality is currently 4.5 million - a high level compared to actual demand.

Enterprises and households raising pigs in Dong Nai have prepared plans to restore pig herds to serve Tet. Imported supplies are always ready. When domestic pork prices increase, the amount of imported pork will be increased. In the third quarter, Vietnam imported up to 75,200 tons of frozen pork - an increase of 115% compared to the second quarter and more than 158% compared to the same period last year.

Due to weak purchasing power, many businesses have unsold goods, causing the weight of pigs sold to increase from 100 kg to about 120 kg/head. Thereby, meat output increased by about 20%, contributing to stabilizing the market and reducing the risk of shortage.

Forecasting the market for the upcoming Christmas and Lunar New Year, businesses believe that pork prices may recover slightly, but will hardly increase sharply. “When the rainy season ends, pork prices may remain stable and wait for market developments at the end of the year,” said a business.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong predicted that during Tet, live pig prices may increase to about 60,000 VND/kg – enough for farmers to make a profit. However, he noted that African swine fever still poses a potential risk of invading farms that do not comply with biosecurity measures. Therefore, strict declaration and disease prevention are still important requirements.

2. High prices of commercial chickens, farmers “relieve” difficulties

Commercial chickens are being purchased at high prices, helping farmers in Ha Tinh offset costs caused by natural disasters and providing more motivation for farmers to stabilize production.

For many years now, raising chickens has been the main source of income for Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh’s family (Bac Hoa village, Yen Hoa commune). Despite suffering great damage after storms No. 5 and No. 10, Mrs. Thanh has quickly re-raised herd of more than 1,000 chickens to stabilize production.

Chicken farming is the main source of income for many households in Yen Hoa commune.

Ms. Thanh confided: “Although the investment costs for repairing barns, buying breeds and feed are quite high, commercial chickens are being purchased at 70,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg higher than at the beginning of the year, the consumption market is wide open, so we also have more motivation to restore the herd, ensuring stable production development again”. “Chicken prices are high due to reduced supply in many localities. At the same time, the complicated developments of African swine fever have caused consumers to switch from pork to chicken for processing, thus increasing demand. On average, I purchase more than 200 kg of commercial chicken per day to supply to local markets. In addition, I also deposit 20-30% for livestock households to ensure supply for the Tet market” – Ms. Tran Bich Hau (a chicken trader in Ky Anh commune) said.

According to the Ha Tinh Department of Crop Production and Livestock, the total poultry herd in the province is estimated at more than 10.2 million, of which chickens account for more than 8.6 million. At this time, the livestock situation is starting to “warm up” in the last months of the year, it is predicted that the selling price of poultry in general and commercial chicken prices will remain high, even continuing to increase near Tet.

However, at this time, prolonged cold and rain combined with humidity pose many risks of disease outbreaks. Experts recommend that people proactively prevent common diseases such as: H5N1 avian influenza, respiratory infections, typhoid, chicken cholera, etc. In addition, it is necessary to have measures to keep barns warm, ensure hygiene, take advantage of available food sources to save costs, contributing to increasing profits when selling barns.
