1. Quang Ngai: Many localities are "infected" with African swine fever (ASF) with a risk of spreading.

On the morning of July 26, speaking with Dan Viet Newspaper Reporter, a representative of Son Tay mountainous district government said that after a large number of pigs died in two communes of Son Tinh (about 50 pigs) and Son Lap (about 30 pigs) a few days ago, this locality directed the veterinary department and related competent authorities to urgently handle the destruction and spray disinfectants.
Accordingly, in the past 3 days, no report from the remaining communes of Son Tay district has given on new outbreaks or points of infection.
On the governing Department, on July 23, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai, Nguyen Quang Trung, also submitted a report in writing to the Provincial People's Committee on the developments of the African Swine Fever situation in the province. In the outgoing document sent to the provincial authority, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai stated that as stated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, from the beginning of 2024 to now, the whole country has had over 660 ASF outbreaks in 44 provinces and cities forcing the destruction of over 42,400 pigs; notably, in Bac Kan, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Son La, Quang Nam and Long An provinces ...etc. causing heavy losses to the livestock farmers.
For Quang Ngai province, in the first 6 months of 2024, ASF occurred in 26 communes of 10/13 districts, towns and cities of the province.
Specifically, ASF appeared and occurred in the Son Tinh, Binh Son, Nghia Hanh, Tu Nghia, Ba To, Son Tay, Son Ha, Tra Bong districts, Duc Pho Town and Quang Ngai City, with a total of 430 dead and destroyed pigs.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai acknowledged that the current ASF situation in the area is increasing and a very high risk of widespread seriously affecting the food supply (pork), consumer price index, environment and health of people in the province.
In order to proactively and effectively organize and implement measures to prevent and control ASF in the province, following the direction of the Central Government, a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai said that they have drafted and consulted the People's Committee to review and direct the localities, specialized agencies, and related agencies to implement measures to prevent and control ASF in the area to achieve the highest efficiency.

Since the beginning of July, the Sub-Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has been vaccinating against African Swine Fever in more than 140 pigs of 3 households in Cam Hoang and Duc Chinh communes.  This test vaccination aims to evaluate the effects of the vaccine in preventing African Swine Fever in order to apply large-scale vaccination in the province in the coming time.
Previously, in October 2023, the Sub-Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine also tested the vaccine on 40 pigs of a household in Cao An commune (Cam Giang). After 28 days of close monitoring, the Sub-Department took 16 serum samples for testing. The report results showed that all serum samples met the protective immunity and the vaccinated pigs were healthy and developed normally.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, total pig herd in the province is 440,000 heads. Of which, 42,500 are sows and boars and 300,700 are hogs for meat. The number of piglets nursed by sows is estimated at about 96,800.
In the first 6 months of 2024, the pig farming in Hai Duong developed steadily, growing by 4.6%. The pig farming has shifted rapidly towards farms with small-scale farming decrease. The proportion of industrial and farm farming accounts for over 60%, contributing to increasing meat output and efficiency in farming. However, since the beginning of 2024, pig prices have increased, so the farmers have tended to make repopulation massively, but the interest and use of vaccines is still limited. There is no ASF vaccine for sows and boars. The farmers have not implemented minimum veterinary hygiene measures in disease prevention. Control of trading, transportation of pigs, pig products, and slaughter control in some localities have not been strictly applied yet ...etc.

3. Dong Nai: Nearly 1,300 livestock farms, households stop the livestock farming due to being forced to relocate

As of June 2024, in Dong Nai, 1,296 livestock farms, households had stopped their activities due to being forced to relocated out of areas where the livestock farming was not allowed. On July 16, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province announced that by the end of June 2024, 1,296 livestock farms, households in the area that had stopped their activities and only 10 livestock farms, households had moved out of areas where the livestock farming was not allowed.
Previously, in February 2023, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province issued a decision approving a list of more than 3,000 livestock farms, households that had to move out of areas where livestock farming was not allowed.
By April 2023, the People's Committee of Dong Nai province had conducted a general inspection of livestock farms, households across the area to completely handle environmental pollution in livestock farming activities and assess the environmental status of livestock farms, households. As a result, 168 livestock farms, households were fined with a total amount of more than VND 7.1 billion.

According to data from the Dong Nai Statistics Office, total livestock herd as of June 2024 was 2,316,438 heads (down 6.14% over the same period) with 3,988 buffaloes (up 5.64%); 108,382 cows (up 0.35%).
The pig herd accounted for the largest amount with 2,204,068 heads and decreased by 6.45% over the same period. The reason was that the price of live pigs in the first months of the year was low, although it increased but not much, so it somewhat affected the psychology of farmers, especially small-scale farmers, and the high input costs caused many difficulties for farmers.
“On the other hand, the relocation of livestock projects out of areas where the livestock farming is not allowed continues to be strictly implemented. Many districts with large pig farming numbers such as Thong Nhat, Trang Bom and Xuan Loc are reviewing, relocating, and restricting the development of livestock households and farms due to their failure to ensure the environmental conditions causing the decrease in the total herd,” analyzed by the Dong Nai Statistics Office.
