INFECTIOUS SINUSITIS IN GOOSES AND DUCKS

Date 2025-07-21

The disease occurs in ducks and geese of all ages, usually not fatal but lasts a long time if not treated thoroughly.

1. Causes of the disease

• Caused by Mycoplasma and secondary Staphylococcus, Streptococcus
• Due to high density of confinement, high concentration of NH3 gas in the barn, poor ventilation of the barn, damp and unsanitary barn floors...

2. Epidemiological characteristics

• The disease usually occurs in ducklings from 4 to 20 days old
• The disease mainly damages the respiratory tract, making it difficult for ducklings to eat and drink, gradually stunting and causing other diseases such as Ecoli, Septicemia, cholera, etc.
• Damp barns, changing weather and poor rearing conditions (stuffy barns, odors, etc.) are conditions for pathogens to develop and cause disease

3. Symptoms

• First, ducks in the flock make a squeaking sound, then the number increases gradually over time
• Both sides of the nose have a clear, watery discharge, then a cloudy white discharge
• Both sides of the nose have soft, round lumps
• Many ducks have red, inflamed eyes, and may be blind

4. Lesions

• Nasal mucosa, nasal cavity is red and congested, containing inflammatory fluid
• Pneumonia, hydrops

• Thickened and opaque hyperplastic membrane of the air sac
• Pericarditis with fluid accumulation or inflammation adhering to the myocardium

5. Diagnosis

Based on the epidemiology of the disease combined with clinical symptoms and typical surgical lesions to diagnose the disease

6. Disease prevention and treatment

Disease prevention:

Clean and disinfect the barn thoroughly after each batch, quarantine for at least 14 days between batches

Keep the barn clean and dry, take good care of the ducks and geese

Regularly disinfect the barn with Donacid or Dovidine 1-2 times/week

  • Treatment:

Adjust hygiene conditions and ventilation in the barn
Spray disinfectant in the barn with Donacid or Dovidine
Antibiotic treatment for ducks and geese:
Total flock: mix one of the following antibiotics: Doxy - 500 (dose 1g/20kg P), DONA PUTIL 250 (dose 1ml/15kg P) or Pharmatil - 200 (dose 375g/1000l of water). Use for 3 - 5 days.

Heavy fish: catch them separately and inject them with GENTATYLO at a dose of 1ml/7.5kg P.
